Royal Suites Spotlight: “I’m by myself, but I’m not alone here.”

Every resident has a story, and sometimes it’s the little things, a cherished keepsake, a favourite photo, or a meaningful memento, that tell it best.

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on one of our wonderful residents, whose journey to Royal Suites is a story of friendship, resilience, and finding community in an unexpected place.

Long before she became a resident, The Royal Suites already felt familiar. She and her husband would often visit friends who lived here, joining them for meals, events, and special occasions. During those visits, they didn’t just get to know the residents. They got to know the staff, too.

“Everyone was always so welcoming,” she recalls. “It just felt like a place where people genuinely cared.”

After many visits, the decision became clear. They listed their home, sold it, and planned to begin a new chapter together at Royal Suites.

When it came time to choose a suite, there was no hesitation. One apartment immediately stood out to her.

“It just felt like home.”

Life, however, had different plans. Before they were able to move in, her husband passed away.

Despite her loss, she chose to continue with the move, a decision that came with understandable uncertainty. She describes herself as someone who had always been fairly quiet and imagined she would mostly keep to herself.

Instead, she found something she never expected.

The warm smiles from neighbours, friendly conversations over coffee, and invitations to join activities slowly drew her in. What began with trying a few events quickly turned into new friendships and a calendar filled with things she genuinely looks forward to.

Whether she’s enjoying Happy Hour, gathering with friends during coffee breaks, building strength in exercise classes, dancing at Dancercize, listening to live music, competing in bingo, or sharing a delicious meal in our dining room, she’s discovered that community often begins with simply saying yes.

“It was such a nice surprise,” she says.

Today, the treasured items in her suite serve as reminders of the life and memories she brought with her, while each new day at The Royal Suites adds another chapter to her story. Her home reflects where she’s been, but the people around her remind her that she still has so much to look forward to.

When asked what The Royal Suites means to her now, her answer is simple, heartfelt, and says everything about the community we’ve built together.

“I’m by myself, but I’m not alone here.”

Those words beautifully capture what makes The Royal Suites so special. It’s more than a place to live. It’s a place where neighbours become friends, where familiar faces brighten each day, and where life continues to be filled with connection, laughter, and meaningful moments.
